Emergency Response Network
The Emergency Response Network (ERN) responds to calls for support from our sisters and brothers in Latin America. We receive information about human rights violations from various national and international networks. When small farmers, community organizers, labor leaders, religious or human rights workers are threatened, disappeared, tortured or assassinated in Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, or Colombia, a cry of protest from U.S. citizens can help prevent an attack or even secure the release of the captured, & lets those in power know that they are being watched.
We send out messages protesting these abuses to the appropriate officials in Latin America, as well as to our own government, in our ERN members’ names. We send a member a copy of every message that is sent in his or her name, along with some background information on the case. These newsletters provide information about the general human rights climate in Latin America to give a better understanding of the context in which the cases occur. It also lists summaries of all letters written in the names of other ERN members.
If you would like to join the Emergency Response Network & have us send letters in your name and/or if you would like to volunteer to write letters, please contact us.
