Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance Executive Director Job Description

Organization: The Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance

Position: Executive Director

Mission statement: “The Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance is an interfaith community that practices the living tradition of sanctuary. Led by people of faith and conscience, CMSA works for human rights throughout the Americas and holds public authorities accountable for violations of these rights.”

Brief organizational history: The Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance was founded in the mid-1980’s by congregations and individuals responding to the needs of refugees fleeing the violent civil conflicts in Guatemala and El Salvador. For the past 20 years, CMSA has accompanied the people of Latin America in their efforts to build societies of justice, peace, and security for all. The particular call to practice sanctuary has expanded over the years and so has our response. The enduring thread of our work is the practice of sanctuary that calls us to educate and organize faith communities about the ongoing struggles against impunity, violence, economic and political injustice; to provide material assistance to grass-roots projects that promote human rights; and to advocate for more just and humane U.S policies and actions both here in the U.S and toward Latin America.

Brief description of organization’s programs and accomplishments:
-CMSA educates its members and responds to human rights violations through its volunteer letter writing campaign, the Emergency Response Network
-Staffs and supports the Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition, a local network of the New Sanctuary Movement. CNSC educates people of faith concerning the threats immigrants face in the US and equips congregations to accompany immigrants and advocate for just U.S immigration policy
-Provided safe haven to Colombian human rights workers through our Chicago Colombia Sanctuary Program and educated congregations in the US regarding the conflict
-Provided accompaniment to returned Guatemalan communities and established sister relationship with Chaculá (Nueva Esperanza), Guatemala, and continues to advocate for social justice in Guatemala.
