Upcoming Events

School of the Americas

time:
21/11/2008 - 7:36am - 24/11/2008 - 2:37pm

From the SOA Watch website:

"The annual November vigil to close the School of the Americas at the gates of Fort Benning will follow the presidential election by two weeks. It will be an opportunity for the progressive movement to push for the closure of the SOA/WHINSEC and to set an agenda against oppressive U.S. foreign policy, whatever the result of that election"

CMSA will join our partner organization CRLN- The Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America in participating in the School of Americas vigil Nov 21-24th.   Please join with thousands of others at the gates of the SOA/Whinsec at Fort Benning for the vigil to commemorate the thousands of lives lost as a consequence of this military training program. The weekend of events at the gates include music, speakers, protests, and a somber liturgical procession and remembrance of those killed in Latin America by militaries and para-militaries trained at the SOA. Some participants also choose to engage in civil disobedience by entering the base and being arrested.

Please go to www.crln.org to learn more about the School of the Americas, to learn about the itinerary and make travel arrangements.  Contact Danielle Wegman at dwegman@crln.org or 773-293-2964 to reserve your spot soon!

The Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition will be joining groups from around Chicago in calling on President-elect Obama to suspend deportations and stop the raids.
Please read below for more information and the list of 8 steps we are asking Barack Obama to take under the new administration.
We will have more information available closer to the date.

Because Barack Obama is President-elect, the Peace and Justice Community will gather together in a spirit of celebration and anticipation.
We trust President Obama will lead our government toward more just policies and counter the racist and oppressive stance of the past administration.

Join us at East 51st Ave. and South Drexel Ave in Drexel Square as we encourage President Obama’s administration to take 8 bold steps during the first months in office.

We have heard him as Senator endorse these steps and we want to let him know that we will fully support the kind of decisive and progressive change he represents.

President Obama, will you?
1.Withdraw troops from Iraq by 5,000 each month and immediately cease offensive combat operations?
2.Take all nuclear weapons off hair trigger alert
3.Close Guantanamo, eliminate military tribunals and allow detainees, access to U.S. court system
4.Suspend deportations of immigrants and stop raids
5.Submit the Kyoto Protocol to Congress for ratification
6.Establish a commission to explore policies for full employment
7.Issue a 90 day moratorium on housing foreclosures
8.Start a commission to explore policies on universal Health Care
