Other Side of US Border Policy
Encounter - Split the class into small groups (of up to six people) to discuss the articles “Men With Guns,” “Prisoners With No Crime,” and “Straddling the Border” from the Sojourners discussion guide. Each group should be assigned one article to look at and think about these questions:
• Where is racism evident in this article?
• What is being done that perpetuates racist structures and what is being done to oppose them?
• What behavior should we emulate and what should we oppose?
Reflect - Return from small groups and have each group share what it talked about in answer to the questions. Focus the discussion on where white skin privilege is evident. Consider previous learnings on how racism has operated historically and how it operates today, what implications does this have for what is happening on the southern US border?
