Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition
The Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition is a coalition of interfaith religious leaders and participating congregations standing together in our faith that, regardless of national origin, everyone has basic rights, including livelihood, family unity, and physical and emotional safety.
The Colombia Sanctuary Project works with congregations in the Chicago area to offer sanctuary to endangered Colombian human rights defenders, as well as offer opportunities for people in the US to learn from & accompany those who are struggling for peace in Colombia.
The Emergency Response Network (ERN) responds to calls for support from our sisters and brothers in Latin America. We receive information about human rights violations from various national and international networks.
During the 1980's, thousands of Guatemalans fled their homes in the wake of genocidal attacks by the Guatemalan Army. Many of them crossed the border into southern Mexico, where they remained living in refugee camps for some 12 years.
The Pedal for Peace Bike-a-Thon is an annual fundraiser organized by the Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance to support our partner organizations in Latin America. It takes place at the end of September or beginning of October. Participants raise funds through sponsors and then participate in a scenic bike ride down the Chicago lakefront with many other CMSA supporters. A dinner to feed the hungry cyclists tops off the event. All participants who raise more than $100 in pledges receive a free Bike-a-Thon T-shirt. Please contact us for further details.
