RACE: The House We Live In
Encounter – Introduce and watch video
Reflect – Give learners 10 minutes after the video to gather their thoughts, during this time they are to write down their first impressions as well as any observations or questions. Ask for volunteers to share what struck them the most deeply. Let the discussion progress but be prepared with guiding questions:
• What part of our history was most surprising to you?
• Should this history be taught in schools? Why? How should it be done?
• After seeing this video how has your conception of racism changed?
• What do you think about the role immigration and citizenship have played in shaping the idea of race?
• What is today’s standard for becoming a citizen?
• What might this say about who immigration policies are trying to include and exclude?
