Encounter – Introduce and watch video, 1 hour
Reflect – Give learners 10 minutes after the movie to gather their thoughts, during this time they are to write down their first impressions as well as any observations or questions. Ask for volunteers to share what struck them the most deeply. Guiding questions for discussion:
• Think about the “Ten Years of Spring” that started in 1944. What happened to make this a great time, why did it happen? Why do these years have such a great reputation?
• What happened to end the “Ten Years of Spring?” Why?
• How was the government of the United States involved? Does this sound like any other conflicts in our history?
• To where, or what to incident in the film, do you trace the cause of the Civil War?
• Is the Santa Anita community the rule or the exception to the rule in Guatemala? Why do you think that is?
• What do they have working in their favor?
• What do they have working against them?
• How is the United States involved in Guatemala today?
• Think about what the government of the US could do on a policy level?
• Think about what the people of the US could do on a practice level?
Allow at least 1.5 hours
